Social Thinking Groups for children, adolescents and adults

index.php

Social Thinking Groups offered in North Dallas for children and adolescents with a diagnosis of Autism, PDD, PDD-NOS, Asperger's Syndrome, Nonverbal Learning Disability, ADD/ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder, and individuals who do not have a diagnosis but need support in social situations.

Our goal is to provide our clients with a lot of opportunities to learn and practice initiating and maintaining social interactions and conversations with their peers in a group setting. We are analyzing all the foundation skills needed for a successful experience in a group setting and we are providing a supportive environment to learn and practice those specific skills.

We designed our curriculum and structured our groups to address core skills for each of the age groups.

With our younger children we are concentrating on play skills including, but not limited to: watching peers in play, imitating peers, initiating and responding appropriately to initiations, maintaining play by building on or adding new ideas to the "scene". Through play and other social activities we are also targeting conversation skills, inferencing skills, understanding own and other's emotions as well as what it means to be part of a group.

With school age children and adolescents we are implementing Michelle Garcia Winner’s social thinking curriculum. We explore social concepts related to: being part of a group - the need to establish physical presence (be in the same space) as well as use our whole body to show interest in our friends and let them know when we are paying attention to them; thinking with our eyes - eye contact has meaning and is purposeful (when we look at someone we are thinking about that person, we are trying to figure out what they may be planning to do or what they may be thinking about us); understanding own and other emotions with an emphasis on the facial features that make up a facial expression and the events that may "cause" a specific emotion; understanding that people have thoughts about us, understanding how our behavior determines what other people may think about us, and so much more.

Our staff is highly trained and experienced. We combine Floor Time strategies and principles of Applied Behavior Analysis to address the individual needs of our clients.

Our groups are offered in 2 hours slots for the summer (see all available time slots below) and we have 2 facilitators for each group (maximum number of children in each group is 8).

Summer sessions available June 2 - August 15.
